After listening to a poem by Paul Cookson, the children worked together to create a type of poem called a 'Kenning'. After rehearsing, we performed it, along with a yell at the end (Kate's idea!). We even created a new nonsense word 'helperer' which fitted the model... What do you think?

Over a week ago a large number of our Y6 children bravely put themselves forward for the important position of Team Captain. We have 4 school teams and each team has two Captains - a boy and a girl. In order to help you decide they made a speech, explaining all they could offer to the post. This is a picture from assembly on Friday - it shows all the Y6 who went for the post of Team Captain. Well done everyone - we were so proud and pleased that so many of you wanted to try for this position. Following the speeches we had a democratic vote. Everyone from Y1 to Y6 got to vote for the boy and the girl they would like to be their Team Captains. Votes were counted and the results were announced in assembly on Friday. Here are our Captains for 2014-2015. WELL DONE 😊 Yesterday, Years 5 and 6 took part in a poppy planting activity at Beamish Hall Hotel to remember the sacrifices of fallen soldiers. Kerry from the hotel explained how the mud of the fields on northern France was thrown up by bombs in World War I, which allowed poppies to grow. We then scattered the seeds and put soil on them. We hope to found that they grow creating a red carpet and a reminder of the soldiers' sacrifices. Thanks to all who attended our 'Meet the Teacher' sessions this week. These were information sessions for you, as parents, to learn more about your child's class routines/expectations and what you can do to support them this year, particularly in their learning. We hope you found them useful. Some information will be appearing on the class blogs soon to give you some information if you were unable to attend. Please help us make things even better next year by completing the evaluation form sent out tonight. Thank you. At the start of this term we celebrated the great attendance of over 50 of our children. Anyone who has 100% attendance over a term is awarded a very special badge in assembly. 51 children were awarded this on Friday for 100% attendance during the summer term. In addition to this it was announced that 12 of those children had 100% attendance for the whole academic year. What an amazing achievement. That got a huge round of applause and they were all given a small trophy in recognition of this. Here they are, pictured below. Good attendance is so important. Every day at school matters. We hope to be celebrating the great attendance of even more children this term. Following our moving Leavers' Assembly, all of Upper School headed to the Park. Watch the video below and leave a comment about your day.... We hope you have a lovely summer holidays! Today Year 4 children are at the Leadership Centre in Spennymoor for our annual Diversity conference with Brandon Primary School. We were very lucky to have Deputy Mitchell introduce our conference via webcam, and then we have been taking part in a variety of activities to promote diversity and the fact that everyone is unique. Children have enjoyed meeting up with friends from Brandon and working together to find out about each other. Lunchtime gave us the opportunity to spend more time with our new friends, as well as have fun outside, then it was back to the activities! During the day we planted sunflowers, used puppets to create movie clips for welcoming new children in school, researched different countries taking part in the World Cup and made some Finger Fortune-Tellers! So Year 4, a few questions for you... What have you found out about diversity today? What have you enjoyed doing at the conference? Have you made any new friends today or learnt more about people you already know? We worked together during the afternoon to put a welcome video together for children who are new to our school. It can be difficult starting a new school, not knowing anyone, not knowing how things are organised. We hope that this video will go some way to helping new children start at our school. Not the Bug Club that you are thinking of - although that is great too, having so many books at your finger tips. However, this Bug Club is about real bugs, the type of bugs you find crawling around - inside and out. A group of our Y2 children have been creating their own Bug Club outside and they have some members already - have a look at these pictures. Amazing effort by everyone in our Mathletics Week!! The school total was an incredible 596,808 points. Our winning class, Mr Patterson's class, managed the huge score of 245,505. Mrs Penna's class got the biggest KS1 class total - 65,540. Our individual winners are pictured above. Not surprisingly the Grand Champion, with the grand total of 23,000, came from Y5. Well done everyone for such a massive effort. Keep it up - if that is at all possible!! |
